Wolong spotlights medium-voltage VFDs

Global manufacturer of industrial motors and drives, Wolong Electric America, said its medium-voltage variable frequency drives (VFDs) are designed to deliver superior performance, reliability and efficiency to industries such as mining. The VFDs combine advanced technology with robust construction to ensure long-term operational excellence in even the most challenging environments.

Built on a proven cascaded H-Bridge topology utilizing an IGBT-based multi-level voltage source inverter, these drives produce low-distortion output that eliminates the need for filters and can control both legacy and modern motors. The topology has been engineered to exceed the capabilities of traditional two or three-level inverters and is significantly superior to current source inverter designs, according to Wolong.

In addition to delivering exceptional control, the VFDs provide high system reliability through power cell redundancy and neutral rebalancing, allowing continued operation even if a power module fails. The modular design enables the rapid swap-out of power modules, further minimizing downtime.

At the foundation of these drives is an all-copper pulse phase shift transformer, offered as standard starting with models at 1000 horsepower. The transformer reduces harmonics to the local grid well beyond the requirements of IEEE 519 and most utility codes, ensuring low distortion and improved system compatibility. With industry-leading power density, Wolong has optimized system footprint while employing a modular drawer-style structure for easier maintenance and service access.

The drives are engineered to handle a broad range of industrial applications, with a 4160V capacity spanning from 1000 – 5500 hp and 130 – 635 amps. Input voltage tolerance is designed at 4160V ±10%, with optional configurations from 3.3kV – 13.8kV, and input frequency at 50 or 60Hz ±5%. This versatility makes them suitable for critical equipment such as fans, pumps, compressors, blowers and conveyors. Further, a modular design cell architecture ensures fast maintenance, while an innovative ventilation system and redundant fans keep power elements cool, enhancing longevity and maintaining high system reliability.

User interaction is streamlined through the Wolong drive interface, which allows intuitive monitoring of operational status and fault alarms. Operators can conveniently access all drive parameters, view fault records, and integrate the system into existing site control platforms using the most common communication interfaces.

The medium-voltage VFDs are UL-certified, meeting all U.S. market requirements both for the complete VFD unit and Wolong Electric America’s proprietary power cells.
